Rafting: Mission Accomplished

Well, the rafting weekend has come and gone, and I still have all my teeth. Always a plus. We all had a great time, except of course for the bachelor, who wasn’t able to make it because his wife-to-be was sick. Luckily, it wasn’t anything too serious, she just had a bad reaction to some medicine she took.

Erik was the big winner this weekend, falling in the river all of three times. I did fall in once (after the boat folded in half compliments of a 10′ waterfall), as did everyone but Jeff and Jeremy, but hey… it’s all part of the fun! For some reason, we also took the opportunity to “swim the rapids”, which actually means that you willingly jump in the cold water, get huge, breath-stealing waves in the face and smack your ass on a few shallow rocks.

Yeah, that was a good idea.

The worst part of the rafting day was lunch. The food was ok, but it was overlooking the Category 5 section of the river that we were to go through. Another rafting company came through while we watched, and… had a bad day.

One raft got a few people thrown out into the rapids and then the raft got stuck on a huge rock. In the meantime, another boat came around the bend… upside-down. All of those customers got a nice up close look at the pointy parts of the local rocks. Those in the earlier boat who got caught on the rock were there for our entire lunch hour, as they tried to get ropes across to pull them all to safety.

So yeah, after that the confidence gained from the first part of the day was pretty much gone. Still, we ventured on. As a matter of fact, when we got to that section, we passed it pretty easily, making us wonder just how bad the guide would have had to been to screw that up. Much thanks to our guide Joe and the rafting company he works for.

We bought one of the action shot photos of us out on the water, once I get a copy of it, I’ll post it over here somewhere.
