Decisions, decisions

Server’s back up today. Don’t know what happened all of yesterday, but we were offline. Gave me time to think about hosting my own server using zoneedit to control the dynamic DNS.

Thne I started thinking about the movie reviews page and how it’s getting bigger and bigger every day. If I was running my own server, perhaps I could put together a linux box running Apache, MySQL and PHP and turn it into a database instead of just some silly XML flat file.

Of course, this would all mean that I’d have to learn MySQL and PHP, but that’s part of the fun. I didn’t know all that much about XML and XSLT before doing the present review page, and that worked out, why not go one step deeper? The reviews XML file is 60k right now, and I’ve only been using it for a few months. Soon, it’s going to get so big that I’m going to have to split it or use some other kind of BS archive trick to get it manageable. Why not fix it before it becomes a problem?

So that’s what’s been running around my head this morning. Didn’t have much time to think about it last night, as Laura went out to Providence to catch Coffee and Cigarettes at the Avon. Had a great time.

At work, things are on hold, as I wait for the server to arrive. It’s scheduled for delivery on Friday, so this week is more preparation than anything else. Once it comes in, I can get working again. In the meantime, I’m going to explore my options in the database realm… Wish me luck.
