Success!

Was struggling with a new layout idea in CSS over the past week or two, and the worst part about it was that it looked exactly as planned in Firefox and Opera, but wouldn’t play ball in IE. (Surprise!)

I was trying to make a centered column of text down the center of the page, and have pictures float in it, yet come out of that center column a bit at the sides. In a nutshell, the text would be about 600px wide max, and the pictures would be allowed an extra 100px on each side, giving the whole thing what I thought to be a nice look. In IE however, the pictures were escaping the normal flow, clearing the text and pushing it down the page.

This afternoon, I figured it out, and feel so much better about it now. IE didn’t like all of the fixed widths I was setting, and instead took to margins on the text much better. Too bad I haven’t had any contact with the prospective client, else this might really be good news. Oh well. I emailed them today to see if there’s any life left there.

Meanwhile, a friend who knows someone who is starting up a small business referred them to me for a website. So who knows, I just might have a new project after all. Going to give them a call later tonight. In that case, I’ll switch gears to that project instead, and let this one reside as a future template. Either way, it’s no harm, no foul.

Three columns are tricky. I’ve found this to be helpful. They’ve had a couple of articles about multi-column layouts.

I’ve been trying to implement a phpWiki. It’s been slow going. Includes of includes and redirections and going round and round until it comes out who knows where. It’s *all* based on css, plus there’s the convoluted code having to do with “themes” that are quite the difficult things.

Wikis creep me out in their insistance to keep backup copies of everything ever typed. That just seems… wrong. I guess I’m just paranoid about running out of “space”. I need space. Space makes me happy.

ALA has gotten weird lately. They used to be all about helpful new ideas, but called themselves out on being “too hacky” and now they’re all about more abstract strategic-type stuff.
