More Critters(?!)

Ok, so the dove family is fun, and the duck was tragic, but it would seem that July is a banner month for animals at the house.

My wife noticed tell-tale signs of mice, so she went out and got some traps. Not the scary spring o’ death traps though, she got these clever little live catch things. They’re actually pretty nifty in their simplicity, although anything is better than poison. Quite honestly, I don’t really want to have this conversation:

Guest: Hey, what’s that smell?

Me: Oh, that? Nothing much, just rotting mouse corpses in the walls.

Anyways, I set the traps with some peanut butter after dinner last night and then went online to play some Halo 2 with the guys. It was around 11:30 when I called it a night, and I went into the kitchen to tidy up before going to bed.

I looked down, and I’ll be damned if one of the traps hadn’t already sprung. I picked the small, gray box up and felt that it was noticibly heavier. Apparently, all of the online gunfire and my yelling didn’t keep a certain someone from his appointed rounds.

We took the trap and walked down the street to where the ducks sometimes hang out. There’s a lot of tall grass and water there, so I figure there could be worse places for mice to be — like my house — and set him free. I brought a flashlight with me so I could watch the little guy as he scurried into the brush. Cute little dude, I must admit.

When we got back to the house, and I cleaned and reset the trap. Woke up this morning, and what do you know, I grabbed another. (At least, I hope it’s another, as it would be really frustrating if the first guy followed me home. Heh.) While it’s good to know that the traps work, I’m kind of hoping that this is the end of the line. I’m tired of being Dr. Demento Doolittle.

In more frightening news, Matt Clement got a nasty gift from Carl Crawford last night as he was hit in the face with a line drive. It looked really nasty, and they even took him away on a stretcher, but it appears as though he’s going to be fine. I would have thought he’d broken bones with the way that thing came at him.

And yes, the Sox won the game, in extra innings. They are only one game in front of the Yankees and a really tight Wild Card race.
