The Denver Public Library website has introduced downloadable “eFlicks” for their cardholders. Users can download full feature-length films with the use of a special DRM-laden player.
Of course, not being anywhere near Denver nor wishing to view films on a 17″ LCD, the program’s overall appeal is somewhat limited. Still, it’s an interesting move from a place that I keep forgetting even has movies, a library.
My point? Among the short list of films they have available is The Bicycle Thief, which just happens to be one of the best films I’ve ever seen. As a matter of fact, there are only three words for those who have not seen both this and Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai: You fail it.
Meanwhile, the only reason I still don’t have it in my personal DVD collection is that I keep hoping that somehow Criterion will pick it up and release a deluxe version…

Cool idea. BPL has eBooks, but that’s all.
The Bicycle Theif is one of my favorites as well, and not just because it has bicycles in it. I saw the Seven Samurai so long ago, I should probably rent it again. I do, however, have The Magnificent Seven. Does that count?

I could go for some eBooks, converted to MP3 and burned to a disc for my long commute. Laura had grabbed some for me in the past, but with her days at the bookstore now very short, I might have to look to the local library.
Rent, shment.
That’s like saying my DVD of Last Man Standing is the same as my copy of Yojimbo.
What? LMS was only like five bucks or something, and it didn’t even make the cut for my main DVD shelf anyways.

Speaking of Seven Samurai, I was excited to get it in the mail today. And then I remembered I had it shipped to my VA address. Sad.
