By chance, I stumbled into the new ESPN Gamecast Beta. I usually use the Yahoo! GameChannel version, but this thing is a lot more impressive.
It’s got situational statistics for each at-bat, letting you know the hitters stats vs. the current pitcher, at the current count, or w/RISP if anyone’s on. You can also toggle the display of each teams hits and outs, to see where the ball’s been traveling, and it keeps track of pitch location too.
And if all of that isn’t enough, it plays a little animation of the ball when it’s hit in play. Silly, but fun.
Seeing that the MLB is going to insist to play day games while I’m stuck at work, it’s good to have things like this to supplement the radio. You can’t always pay attention to the radiocast when things get busy, so game trackers like this help get you caught up quickly.
My only fear is that this is going to end up being a paid ESPN subscriber-only benefit once it comes out of beta.
By the way, congrats to Big Papi for his contract extension. Yep, that’s right. He’s ours, and you can’t have him.
