I finally quit the Columbia House DVD Club this morning. I had joined it for the same reasons most everyone else does: get the “free” movies, pay amazing amounts of shipping for some others until you “fullfil your obligation”, all the while responding “No, Thanks” every time they try to send you the pick of the month.
A while back, once I had bought what I needed from them to sate them, they told me that I wouldn’t have to respond to their monthly selections anymore (mostly because they noticed that I was lazy and all the DVDs they sent me, I sent back—at their expense). But recently, I got three monthly selections at my door in the span of about a week and a half. I sent each back, return to sender.
This morning, I got an email from them. It was a nagging note reminding me to just decline the selections, and they wouldn’t send them. They also gave me an 800 number to call, and my account number. Finally, all the info I needed to cancel my account, all in one convenient place.
So I call, and apparently the guy who takes my call is supposed to run through a retention script before he cuts me loose. He seems about as excited as I am about the prospect, so I let it slide. He offers less mailings each year. No, thank you. He let’s me know that the current promotion is buy one, get others for 60% off. That’s ok, I’m all set. He offers me buy one, get one free…
No, really, I’m good.
Then, he offers me a complimentary copy of Lord of War. I pause. What the hell is Lord of War? Then I remember. Oh yeah, that. Nope, I’m done.
Meanwhile, Laura’ s been asking me what DVDs I might want this Xmas. None of my suggestions thus far have excited her. Oh joy, a Herzog/Kinsky boxset. Apart from that, I can point to the list, and point to the shelf, I suppose.
Honestly, I don’t need anything.
