Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka has signed with the Red Sox for a six year contract. Official word is set to take place later today, after the physical results are in and all the ink dries.
Given the dearth of decent pitching options in the Majors lately, there’s a lot of hope that this one will be worth something big. This signing has the added bonus of opening the doors for other Japanese prospects to come over to Boston as well. There’s no questioning how well Hideki Matsui has done for the Yanks.
For the record, the “Dice-K” nickname has already gotten on my nerves, and the man hasn’t even thrown a pitch yet. Thanks a lot, local sports media.
The Sox also signed J.D. Drew (OF), Julio Lugo (SS) and Doug Mirabelli (C) to five, four and one year contracts respectively. Manny doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere (big surprise), but the team is going to look a whole lot different than last year… yet again.

D-Mat is a crappy nickname too. And don’t forget about Ichiro Suzuki either.

Yeah, all of those nicknames suck. However, anything with shades of A-Rod is going to get on my nerves.
I didn’t forget about Ichiro, I just didn’t mention him because, well… He’s good, but his team’s been dead weight. He’s all alone out there. If he were on a better team, I’d feel more strongly about him.
