October 2007 eMusic Downloads
I’ve had too much on my plate lately to think about what to download, so I handed the reins over to Laura, who made the majority of this month’s selections. Perhaps if she’s up to it (and if Henry gives her enough free time) she’ll fill in some album comments later.
- Patty Griffin — Children Running Through (12 Tracks)
- The Be Good Tanyas — Blue Horse (10 Tracks)
- Dar Williams — My Better Self (12 Tracks)
- Sleep — Jerusalem (6 Tracks)
- OK, so this is the one pick that I made from the remaining downloads. This was originally supposed to be a single 63 minute song called “Dopesmoker“, but their record label wouldn’t release it, dropped them, and caused the band to break up. eMusic doesn’t offer Dopesmoker, so I get Jerusalem. Repetitive and droning? Sure. Heavier than all hell? Absolutely. I listened to this with headphones while playing Puzzle Quest and almost lost my mind. Given the small distance the sound had to travel, I think that the pressure of the riffs might have actually softened my skull a little.

I didn’t know Patty Griffin was thrash metal. Dar Williams either.
You mellowing out there, dad?

John asked me to write a few sentences about the music I downloaded this weekend…but I really can’t because I haven’t listened to it yet.
However, in listening to the small samples and reflecting on my purchases, I’ve come to realize that all my music sounds the same. Female. Singer-songwriterish. Slightly on the country side. Basically, chick folk.
Oh well.

Try not to get too excited about your new albums, hun. Remember, “the littlest birds sing the pretty ass songs”.
Todd, Patty Griffin is actually Peaches on the side. Don’t tell anyone.
