Saturday afternoon, I rearranged the living room furniture, and was able to wrangle a small group into playing the new music video game Rock Band with me. I had already “unlocked” all of the songs ahead of time, so we had plenty of tracks to choose from.
It was the first time I really got to play on the drums (drum kits and baby naps don’t exactly mix), and it was a blast. I wouldn’t say I’ve got the three limb independence thing down yet, but I can see myself getting there.
The vocals were fun too. While I thought I had a tough go of it trying to replicate Paul Stanley in “Detroit Rock City”, that was nothing compared to poor Kevin trying to follow Geddy Lee’s lead on “Tom Sawyer”. That’s just not fair, but given the situation, he managed it well. (Personally, I think the show-stealing moment was Matt on the mic for NIN’s “The Hand That Feeds”.)
The new Fender Stratocaster guitar controller for this game RULES. Easy to alternate strum, and just comfortable overall. I don’t care for the overpowering effect noises (Jaymz!) but luckily, they’re entirely optional. It’s such an improvement, I had a very tough time going back to the old Guitar Hero II Explorer guitar, with it’s silly buttons and smaller size.
So thanks to everyone who came out to jam with my fake instruments to some kick-ass songs. To all of those who didn’t show, well, you sure f**ked up, didn’t you? No worries, this surely won’t be a one time thing.
