My Vacation

Today is my second day back at work since my 18 day vacation. As much as I’d rather not be behind this desk, I know for sure that the longest vacation I’ve taken for years can no longer get worse. Here’s a brief rundown of the major events, in list form, because I am lazy:

  • A snowstorm cancels Henry’s 1st birthday plans
  • First call from work: 8:00 the morning of my first day off. Much stress ensues.
  • Henry gets stomach flu.
    • Throws up for six days.
    • Gets dehydrated, loses a lot of weight.
    • Must be constantly carried in order to calm down.
    • Doesn’t sleep.
  • Discovered all four tires on my car had to be replaced.
  • Leaky pipes found in basement that also need to be replaced.

But it wasn’t all bad.

  • Jaymz and his wife had their boy, Andrew, at around 1 AM on the 29th. (Laura and Henry will probably meet him this weekend when we try to make it up there for a visit.)
  • My dad got to visit for a few days and see Henry as he was starting to feel a little better.
  • Dad and I were able to get a lot done around the house (including running a network cable through a wall to the master bedroom).

I also canceled our DirecTV service. I just didn’t see it going anywhere, given that making any further changes to our hardware would have invoked a two-year service commitment. I don’t subscribe to those kind of things. It’s why we have a Tracfone instead of a cellular plan. (That, and cellphones are crap.)

What this did was give me the chance to try connecting our basic cable service (good for watching Shilling Shockers and decade old sitcoms — end of list) to a Windows Media Center.

I rarely used my desktop computer, so I upgraded it to Windows Vista Home Premium (yes, a bit of my soul died that day) and added a second TV tuner and larger HDD. Using the Xbox 360 as an extender works great, so I also sprung for a DVI cable to use my TV as my primary computer monitor. Watching Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” on there is actually quite impressive. They just need to keep adding more quality titles to it.

Best thing about all this? I now have a decent excuse to get a 2nd 360 for the bedroom. Heh heh.

Anyways, Henry’s feeling much better these days, and actually slept 10 hours straight last night for the first time in I can’t remember how long. He’s eating like there’s no tomorrow, getting his weight back up to normal.

Can’t wait for 5:00, when I can head back home to see him.

Netflix’s watch instantly feature is great. I’m jealous that you get to use it on your TV.

Do you have an antenna for your HD channels now or does your basic cable service provide them? Even if I were to get the full HD package with my cable company I would only get about 30 channels.

Hey, long time. Happy New Year and all that.

I suppose I could get an antenna and try the whole OTA HD thing, but I don’t think it’s really worth it. I’ve pretty much given up on HD for now.
