February 2008 eMusic Downloads
This month, the first two picks stemmed from the recent revelation of new downloadable songs for everyone-who-visits-my-house’s favorite video game, Rock Band. It would seem that the first release of March will be a three song collection called the “Thrash Pack”. The first song on that list? At The Gates’ “Blinded By Fear“.
Good luck to whoever pulls the shortest straw and has to be on vocals. Read on for the other two.
- The Haunted — One Kill Wonder (11 Tracks)
- This is nowhere as good as their previous album, The Haunted Made Me Do It, which is a shame. The song “Shadow World”, will be the Rock Band pick from this album, but I would have greatly preferred D.O.A..
- Evile — Enter The Grave (10 Tracks)
- No, I’d never heard of these guys before either. The name of this band should immediately be changed to “Damnit, We Wish We Were Early Slayer” because that’s exactly what they sound like most of the time. That is, when they’re not imitating early Anthrax, as in their Rock Band song, Thrasher. (Eh, on second thought, don’t bother clicking.)
- Remember when all of the thrash metal bands had to write a song about metal? (The Toxic Waltz? Whiplash? Rattlehead?) Evile tried for a “retro thrash” album, but unfortunately, the end product sounds more like what would happen if a Slayer cover band decided to write their own songs. Files deleted.
- Carcass — Swansong (12 Tracks)
- Carcass’ last album—as you might have guessed by the title—continues the trend started by their previous album Heartwork to be more melodic than its predecessor. You won’t hear me complain. Heartwork is probably better, if not just from the lack of outright silly song titles.
- godspeed you! black emperor — f#a# ∞ and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (7 Tracks)
- Sometimes when you’re driving an hour to/from work, you want to listen to the score of a movie that was never filmed. That’s what gy!be is in a nutshell. Very long tracks, separated into movements by silence. Wild card pick of the month, that’s for sure.

gy!be is a good pick. f#a# does have East Hastings on it, after all.
