Inevitable

After exactly two years and two months of faithful service, my original Xbox 360 died last night.

Laura and I went upstairs to get Henry ready for bed last night, and the 360 wouldn’t respond to any of the universal remote’s commands except for eject and power. After cycling the power, I was able to start watching a DVD, but even that quickly and repeatedly froze. Couple more power cycles, couple more freezes until I got the RROD.

The thing is not pining for the fjords, it’s bleeding demised.

Called the support line this morning, and they’re going to ship me out a coffin to send it back in for repair. I had once thought that my system was somehow immune to the traps that awaited other’s machines, but it is not so.

Good thing I have the spare.

Will it come with a HD-DVD player?

If it does, then I’ll really know the joke’s on me.

Actually, I just hope it comes back soon. I’ve heard stories of month-long waiting times post repair. Thankfully, we still have our old standalone DVD player, and the Netflix subscription is as healthy as ever.

I’ve had my 360 for about 10 months and I think it is about to kick the bucket. No red rings, no error messages, but the thing will not launch any games. It just goes black after trying to. No matter if it is from a disc or from the arcade.

It also stopped recognizing the HD drive as well. And MS support seems to be baffled by the lack of error messages or light indicators. Weeeeeeeeeee!

Yeow. You’d think by now that they’d just give up and offer an exchange, eh?

Meanwhile, I called mine in almost a full week ago, and still haven’t received my coffin to send it back yet. Have a feeling this isn’t going to end any time soon.

Update: Coffin arrived Monday. Packed the damaged unit, affixed return UPS label and dropped it off at the UPS store near my office today.

It’s all out of my hands now…
