I’m “The Man”

Spent a little time using DNS loopback redirects to stop people in the office from using instant messenger programs on the office network. It was actually kinda fun to keep the little guys down figure out each of different login servers to block. As a matter of fact, DNS was all it took to kill Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and AIM over Trillian. The new AIM client eluded me at first, until I just blocked it off at the firewall.

In case you’re curious, the DNS entries I set to 127.0.0.1 were:

  • login.icq.com
  • login.oscar.aol.com
  • messenger.hotmail.com
  • scs.msg.yahoo.com
  • talk.google.com

Of course, as soon as our users go home and plug their laptops into a connection there… blah blah blah. As long as the firm’s AV signatures keep getting updated, I’ll have to take my chances with that, same as before.

Enough of that crap. What a crazy week it’s been. Long too, as I can’t believe it’s only Wednesday. Laura has an event tonight, so she’ll be home late, leaving me time to try and beat a few levels in Call of Duty 2. Apparently, Rob’s been pulling all-nighters and blazing a trail forward, so at least I have someone to ask should I get stuck.

Memo to self: Listen to this podcast on 2old2play.com when you get the chance.

    You’re goddamn right. ;)

  3. Manny Sucks

Manny already has T.V. screens on every wall. Manny never likes missing highlights of himself. Manny is not afraid of The Man.

Does Manny ever talk about himself in the third person? If so, is that some sort of outer body experience?

Did your usage policy dictate that messenging was a security risk or do you make your own judgement calls? Are you that dude in Hackers that rides a skateboard while holding onto a limo and snatches a disk from Angelina Jolie’s first husband?

Sorry. Server upgrade went well for everybody except for the office manager who has 2 gigs of email and has had Outlook problems for three years. She is the closest to me in the office.

    Wow, someone’s caffinated.

The decision to stop allowing IM was a joint venture. If I had my preference, I’d eliminate crap like Webshots first. Drives me nuts when people complain that their computer is slow, and they have this crap running just so they can look at pretty pictures and have a calendar on their desktop. (?!)

Go figure it’s her email that got screwed up. You knew that that was coming tho, didn’t you?
