Wasn’t a very good day for software today.
Had a problem where a return wouldn’t check out, and an update for the 2005 tax software accidentally made it so that no one could access the program. Got that all fixed, but found out that both of my optical drives (a DVD-RW and a CD-RW) were being seen by Windows, but couldn’t be accessed.
I rebooted into Dell’s diagnostic utilities, and they came up roses there, passing every one. If I removed the drives from Device Manager, they’d be redetected, but with the little yellow exclamation mark on them. The device status said:
“Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)”
I had already replaced the IDE cable, and swapped out one of the drives, but nothing helped. I tried each drive independently of the other, again, no good.
After getting desperate and reinstalling XP SP2 and doing a System Restore from this past Sunday, I found this article on the website that claimed that registry keys could be to blame. I gave it a shot, and it worked. My two drives are back, and everything looks ok.
Don’t know if I have to reinstall any CD burning software, but I’ll deal with that when it comes up. For now, at least, I can finally copy over those Sugar MP3s. Heh heh.
You look like such a fool
Hey look it’s granny cool
